Freewheel Bike has 3 locations in MPLS and last month I sat down at the West Bank store with Freewheel Bike, General Manager, Jake Helmbrecht, to talk fat-bikes and share a guess at what might be new and exciting at Frostbike. Jake talked to us about Freewheel’s Winter Bike Expo that was held, last December, at their Midtown Bike Center, right on the Greenway bike path. Jake said that some where around 3000 people came out to race in a fat-bike crit, test ride and even enjoy a beer tasting, all at the Winter Bike Expo. (How did I miss this?) Freewheel plans to host an even bigger Winter Bike Expo this coming December so mark your calendars for December 8th, 2012. Jake also commented that several of their customers had bought moonlanders and were using them to commute along the Greenway. I wonder if Surly ever thought their super-fatty would be a cold weather commuter?
The shop’s showroom was the best Fat-Bike display that I had ever laid eyes on! The coolest display featured a Moonlander, a Mukluk 2 and a Ti Mukluk, surrounded with Lake winter boots and other essential Fat-Bike accessories.
The center of the store was dominated by two rows of Mukluks and Pugsleys (both Necromancer and Snowblind). This was just last month, when most shops had sold out of most sizes because of this year’s overwhelming demand.
