Bonus Video! Fat-Ghetto Tubeless from Down Under

We’ve been searching for the paramount, “how to’ video for going tubeless on a fatty, and our South Pacific Bureau Chief (Wayne Chapman) sent me this ‘how to’ instructional video, put together by two of his mates that race the Simpson Desert Bike Challenge. Alan Keenleside and Murray Rook have produced the best, fat-bike tubeless instructional video that we’ve seen. It makes sense that two Aussies would make such a film, because the Simpson Desert is a place of many… many… thorns. Tubeless and sealant play a key role in fat-biking in that part of Australia. Cheers! to Alan & Murry!

I have been running the R. Darryl rims & tires on my Mukluk tubeless since day one. It’s probably the #1 upgrade you can make, as I’ve yet to suffer a flat in more than 2,000 miles of primarily off-road riding. Plus, the tires roll much faster and I can safely run down to 4 psi on snow and 7 psi on dirt. Awesome…

BTW… I am using Gorilla Tape for the sealing layer on the rim. It works very well, and my own mixture of sealant (Mold Builder liquid latex and windshield washer fluid). Works like a charm…

Have you guys weighed the conversion before and after?

MG – I was running these rims with tubes before we did the video and one interesting thing we found was the amount of wear to the tube. I generally run the rear tyre at 4.5 psi but have been running as low as 3.5 for traction in sand. At these low pressures the tube rubs on the tyre wall and slowly disintegrates, there was quite a bit of rubber rubble when we popped the tyre off. This year in the Simpson Desert I’ll be running about 4psi in the rear and 3 in the front, will depend of course upon conditions.

Todd, no we didn’t weigh the before and after, but the tubes that we removed weigh 550grams (approx 1 pound) the styrofoam weighs next to nothing, the Schwalbe 20″ tube weighs about 140grams the sealant weighs 120grams, so we saved approx 300grams per wheel.
