Fat-bike Invasion Continues on Fat Tuesday

With the rise of the fat-bike, and media efforts world wide attaching themselves to the juggernaut of fat-bike mania, another chapter of the Fat-bike Invasion was written on Tuesday as Fat-bikers descended on Ray’s Indoor Mountain Bike Park for the Fat Freakin’ Tuesday event to meld to worlds of indoor mountain biking and all-season fat-biking. The mix couldn’t have been more fun. The terrain at Ray’s is varied and fat bikes can access it all.

In the past, a few fat-bikers have braved the New Indoor World of Ray’s and but the Fat Freakin’ Tuesday event marked the first organized effort to in fat-bike history to bring fat-bikers together at Ray’s at one time. One of the managers at Ray’s, Tristan Klein, stated emphatically that this gathering of fat-bikers set a fat-bike attendance record for Ray’s and he hoped to see more events like this in the future.

Fat-biking’s foray to Ray’s had its genisis last year as the Fat Tuesday theme lends itself to a natural tie-in but it took organizer, Tony Berger (above right), to make it a reality this year. Tony’s efforts got riders use of the VIP room at Ray’s where Tony and crew provided Pulled Pork, refreshments and, as a nod to some Polish heritage, Pączki, a Polish pastry that borders on decadent as well as a place to gather, relax and talk fat-bikes.

One of the most popular areas of Ray’s for the riders was the Pump Track where, at times, half-a-dozen fat-bikers rolled simultaneously, making a sound that has never been heard at Ray’s before. The incessant humming of those huge tires and large knobs circling the track in a bump-and-grind fat-bike pump track race.

George Kapitz of Broken Spoke Bike Studio aired out his Salsa Beargrease on the Expert jump line and several other riders braved the jump lines and only one person left in a wheelchair…

Fat Freakin’ Tuesday was a super event and we look forward to next event. Fat Tuesday is March 4th in 2014. I’d go ahead and plan to attend if you are in the area.
