Fat-bike Category Announced at La Ruta for 2013

PURPLE-FAT-Logo-La-RutaIt is now official! Fat-bikes will have their own category at La Ruta de Los Conquistadores in Costa Rica this year from October 24th to 26th, 2013.

Billed as “The Toughest Race in the World” the La Ruta has been going on for 20 years and this year you can grab your rig and 3+” tires and join the race as part of the fastest growing bicycle category in the world! Fat Bikes! Read the Team CoreCo (one of the category sponsors) announcement about the Fat Bike Class at the La Ruta here.

For many participants the La Ruta is “more an adventure than a race” through the landscape of Costa Rica putting bike and rider to the test like never before.

From the start on the Pacific coast in the surfing town of Jaco to the finish in the Caribbean beach town of Limon, the course of the 2013 La Ruta de los Conquistadors spans three days, 259 kilometers and +20,000 vertical feet of some of the most amazing biking in the world.

Spectacular terrain, steep climbs, breathtaking tropical volcanic, mountain vistas, fast single track descents into lush rain forests and dense jungle, fording of rivers and tributaries, miles and miles of unpaved rural roads, dirt trails, single track, railroad trestle bridges and sand…yes, you will pedal along the turquoise Caribbean as you wind up your three-day racing adventure and cross the finish line, elated, spent and satisfied.

The Fat Bike Category for the 2013 La Ruta de los Conquistadores…it is not just a race, it is an all-together life changing experience.

And when you come to race, feel free to wear your best ‘80s neon, perhaps some leg warmers or string bandanas, or even bring your favorite Elvis velvet black light poster with you…anything that will make you feel comfortable (and let you stand out) in the jungles of Costa Rica. Because, clearly, we won’t mind.

Brought to you, in part, by Team CoreCo and Fatback Bikes of Anchorage, Alaska.

In related news, Will from Team CoreCore is entering a group of riders under the Team CoreCo name and has riders coming from as far away as South Africa to ride a fat bike over the three day event. Sandman is even sending a top competitor to (hopefully) place in the top overall standings and push the category beyond one of simple curiosity to a real competitive event!

I’m already here training- had a fun conversation today with a waiter about fatbikes. I just missed the “locals” race around Lake Arenal apparently and I’m very disappointed, wish I could come back for this as wll!

Drew: If you are still here in CR and looking for locals to ride with, give us a shout. In the SJ mountains or at the beach near Santa Teresa (Pacific coast) is where most of us (Team CoreCo) are located, but we could probably hook you up with some folks/places no matter where you are in CR. Hope you do come back this October for the 2013 Fat La Ruta, but if not I hope you get a chance to get some great rides in while you are here (with or without Team CoreCo accompaniment). Best regards, Will (Team CoreCo)
