First Look – Wild Paw 616a Wheelset

Conticomponents Asia is a regional distributor and an ODM in South East Asia, specializing in aftermarket components. Conti just introduced a new fat-bike wheelset to the market called the Wild Paw. The new wheel is the product of a one year three-party development and testing program between Conticomponents, 616 Fabrication and 9:Zero:7. The Wild Paw is a blend of American Ride Expertise and Asian Manufacturing.

June 2013 219

Initial Offerings are Wild Paw 616a and 907a. The former is paired with US-made 616 Fabrication hubs for the most demanding Fat bike enthusiasts whilst the latter comes with price friendly Taiwan-made 9:Zero:7 hubs. Both are hand-built (with Sapim Race spokes) and quality-controlled, before shipping out to International customers. The test set of wheels that we have are the 616a. Angry Andy is the test pilot that will get to put the Wild Paws through their paces, but first we un-boxed them and hung them from the Park Scale.

June 2013 213 copyThe Wild paws are 70mm wide. Hub Spacing is 170mm-rear and 135mm front- laced symmetrically.

The front weighed 2 Lbs. 15 oz. (1332.4g) and the rear 3 Lbs. 6oz (1530.9g)

Andy is going to put these wheels to the test over the next several weeks and report back with his findings.

So I’m assuming these are 135/170mm? *pugsleyownergrumble*

Are they only available as a complete wheel or will the rim be available? Any idea on just rim weight?

I checked with Conticomponents and here’s what they told me. They’re available as just a rim. Rims are 950grams each. Price per rim is $98 USD and that includes free shipping.

not exactly easy to find the wheels on their website though.

as in, not at all listed.

    anywhere.

    at all.

Blast from the past. Those rims look a lot like the old Fatback 70mm rims.

Gomez, how is the bead seat on those at low psi?

We’ll let you know as soon as we get some miles in on these!

Pete – these wheels were a total pain to get a tire bead to set correctly.

They look a lot like the On-One rims, which are jetset hc517s rims, except these have lightening holes. I would rather pay the extra for some Surly or Uma rims, and have a bead seat that is more user friendly, and low pressure capable.

We’re holding our judgement till we rigorously test these wheels. We don’t judge components merely by looking at pictures on the internet. We actually ride the components we feature on the pages of fat-bike and then report those findings in both a short term and then long term reviews.

Buyer beware on this wheelset – Tires were a total hassle to mount. I think this is the first item that we have had to put on the ‘no buy list’. The tester complained about other issues as well.
