This week started with the unveiling of Surly’s new fat-bike called the Ice Cream Truck and then later, made history with both the Men’s and Women’s, Iditarod Trail Invitational records being shattered by Kevin Breitenbach and Heather Best. A week that also presented 2 new carbon rims, three new fat-bike companies and Clowns on ice.
Tomorrow starts March Fatt-ness! Races every bloody weekend! Speaking of weekends…..this weekend, Sven and representatives from the BikeBlackRibbon/MKE ride chapter are headed out to the Pugsley World Championships in Decorah Iowa. Current PWC Champion, Chewey, wants all of this year’s combatants to know “It’s going to take more than good looks and charm (or big boobs) to win the trophy this year, for I am in charge of the “decider” for the trophy……Also big boobs might help a little”. Gomez and the usual suspects are headed to the Sweaty Yeti at Levis Trow to ride some of Steve-O’s groomed trail and maybe try to build an igloo. Our Amigo Aaron and his whole tribe are throwing the Cuyuna Lakes Whiteout this weekend and The Ice Bowl Ultra and the Mineral Belt Mayhem are all on this weekend’s race calendar (runonsentence.com).
The next few weeks are going to feature some Historic Events.
We want to send a special shout out to JayP who is hosting JayP’s Backyard Pursuit this weekend. This event is the brainchild of world record holding, ultra athlete, Jay Petervary. This race has all of the earmarks of becoming an American Fat-Bike Classic. 60 or 200 kilometers of groomed trails, that run up the valley from Island Park, Idaho to just outside of the crown jewel of America’s National Park System, Yellowstone…..JayP’s Backyard. Next weekend, fat bike racing will celebrate it’s premier Nation Championship at the Fat Bike Birkie in Cable, Wisconsin. There are only just a handful of entries left available of the 500 rider limit. This is the first time that the best fat-bike racers from Alaska and the Lower 48 are going to throw down and see who will be crowned US National Fat-Bike Champion. Fat-bike.com is hosting the Nationals After Party so start making your plans to head up to god’s country. For the latest US National / Fat Bike Birkie event news visit – http://www.birkie.com/news
The following weekend (March 14, 15,16) Sven heads to the North American Handmade Bicycle Show in Charlotte, NC. We’ve got it on good authority that there will be a bevy of fat-bikes along with all the other jewels of the Handmade Masters. Prepare for an onslaught of photos and get your bib or drool cups ready!
Sheesh! That’s only half the month! We’ve got a lot more planned to help you keep your fat-bike fix satiated. More next time!
