New Kenda Juggernaut Tires – First Look!

We received both sizes of the new Kenda Juggernaut Fat-Bike Tires late, last week. Our test tires are the Pro-Level 120TPI folding bead Juggernauts. Juggernauts are also being offered in a Sport/60tpi wire bead and Sport-Folding/60tpi foldin bead. We always start our evaluation process by weighing the tires on our Park Tool Digital Scale and then taking some key measurements. I was literally blown away at how light these tires came in. The Juggernaut 4.0 is the lightest tire that we’ve ever seen! And not by a few grams. The Juggernauts ar over 300 grams lighter than any other real fat-bike tire that we have ever officially weighed. This post is the first look that we’ll take at these tires. We’ll be getting these in the hands of our BBR Test Pilots and after that, we’ll publish a review. This is an introduction to the tires that we’ll be testing.

The Kenda Juggernaut 4.0

(The Lightest Fat-Bike Tire We’ve Ever Weighed!)

The tread pattern on the Juggernauts reminds me of an Endomorph on steroids. Kenda took the proven chevron pattern of their Nevegal X tire and created a tread depth of 2mm in the center and 3mm on the edge for the 4.0 and 5mm/center and 6mm/edge on the 4.5. The first time I weighed the 4.0’s…..I couldn’t believe my eyes, so I reset the scale and measured again. I wrote down all of the data and then, the next morning I weighed the 4.0’s again, just to make sure. These tires are the lightest production fat-bike tire in existence! I mounted the Juggernaut 4.0 to an old school Large Marge (pictured above) and took our usual measurements.

Weight – 767 g, 771 g

Mounted Width – 100 mm on 65 mm wide rim

Bead to Bead Flat Width – 225 mm

Tread to Tread Flat Width – 113 mm

Juggernaught 4.0 and Vee Tire H-Billy 4.25 both mounted on 65 mm wide rims

The Kenda Juggernaut 4.5

The 4.5’s have the same tread pattern as the 4.0’s, just enlarged to fit the larger casing, but with much taller knobs. These are a ‘true to size’ 4.5″ tire that weighs in the same range as many 3.8″ tires!

Weight – 1375 g, 1372 g

Mounted Width – 113 mm on 100 mm wide rim

Bead to Bead Flat Width – 248 mm

Tread to Tread Flat Width – 140 mm

You can see how these tire weights compare on our Tire Weight Page – http://fat-bike.com/2012/01/tire-weights-for-fat-bikes/

We shot video of Ben Anderson, from Kenda, talking about the Juggernauts at Interbike this year. You can view that video here – http://fat-bike.com/2014/09/ben-from-kenda-talks-about-the-two-new-kenda-fat-bike-tires/

The MSRP on the Pro Level Kenda Juggernauts that we’re testing is $120. Unfortunately these lightweight beauties will not be available until after the first of the year. I can’t wait to get these tires onto a racers bike and see what they think. We’ll keep you posted as more information becomes available about when you can get your hands on these new lightweight sneakers!

I’d be happy to give these a proper test at some local races or at Fat Bike Birkie if the conditions warrant them. At 800 grams, these only marginally heavier than a UST 29er tire. Are the sidewalls made out of crepe paper?

I just got confirmation from Jesse LaLonde that he’ll be the test pilot for these new tires. You can look forward to his thoughts soon!

Wow that weight is incredible, do I need to cancel my Schwalbe order?

This is very exciting news to me, but it’s tempered by my concern of the (very) light weight and what that could mean for durability and longevity. I can’t wait to hear your longer term review.

And if you need a fat biker to test sidewall durability in the rocky Mid Atlantic rocky rocks, you know who to call 🙂

So, are these weights still accurate? Kenda lists the 4.0 Pro tire at 1285g in their 2015 catalog… Seems more realistic, but disappointing…

This is a product that is still evolving. our first set of test tires failed. The next set are supposed to be on their way…..for about a month now.

Any word yet on these babies? Is that the real weight? Have they sent you another pair?

        • Gomez July 14, 2015 at 12:16 am #

Sorry to say – No word at all. That was the real weight. They have not sent us another pair. Maybe we’ll get further news at interbike. They pushed the lightness envelope a little too far. I’m sure they’ll be back with something that weighs a little bit more than these tires did, but (hopefully) with a more durable life span.

Cool! Thanks for the info. Even 1000 g would be good. Sure be nice to drop a couple of pounds by just changing tires!

Would the 4.0 work on a 50mm tire?

I’m thinking of using a 4.0 on the front and a 4.5 on the rear (back rim is 100mm).

    Thanks!
