Our buddy at Gates, Paul Tolme, pinged us with a couple of pix of a new Rohloff-equipped fat-bike from Scottish manufacturer Shand called the Tumshie. (I didn’t know what a Tumshie is but thanks to the Interwebs I learned that it is a Scottish word for Turnip!)
I sent a note to Shand and got back some info on the bike from Russ Stout who joined with company founder Steven Shand. Steven started the company back in 2003 and Shand now offers a range of hand-built steel production frames along with one-off custom frames built to specific customer requirements.
The Tumshie was designed around a Rohloff 500/14 XL Speedhub, the Paragon Polydrop rear dropouts (with integrated frame splitter for Gates Carbon Belt Drive) and bolt on cable guides allow fitting of other drive trains, providing a flexible fat bike frame with 4.8 tyre clearance.
The frame geometry is compatible with Bluto suspension forks and available with Shand’s own suspension corrected rigid carbon fork.
Steven Shand said:
“So many people have asked for a fat bike, we decided to make one – and here it is! I’ve built and ridden hundreds of bikes over the years but I can honestly say nothing has put a grin on my face like this one. I absolutely love it. It’s the funnest bike ever!”
That’s a sentiment that we’ve had here at fat-bike.com for years!
