Global Fat-bike Day Anchorage Report

Fatbassador, Travis, from Anchorage sent us this report form the Global Fat-bike Day happenings up that way. Thanks, Travis!

I started my celebration of Global Fat Bike Day 2015 at the Cuddy Park Short Track Race here in Anchorage. The race was put on by the fine folks at Chain Reaction Cycles. I was a volunteer at the race, I did not participate. The race was a short track go all out for a half hour plus one lap type affair. Classes were beginner, sport and expert for men and women. I haven’t raced myself since the early 1990’s so I thought volunteering would be a great way to check things out and meet people. The sun was out and the temp hovered around 20 degrees. We recently got hit with a warm storm that destroyed the snow pack in town and left all the trails covered in glazed ice. We lucked out and got an inch of snow that covered the ice up last week so the race was able to be held. It was a pleasure to meet Jamey Stull and Will Ross (Chain Reaction Cycles) and Mike Jipping the Race Director happens to be a friend and super dude too. Mike brought a PA system and rocked the park.

I do not have access to the official race results as of yet but wanted to share photos of the on goings here in Anchorage on GBFD. Fun was had by all at the race and it was a well-run event chock full of Fat-Bike comradery!

The Global Fat-Bike Day Toys for Tots group ride was Saturday night at Goose Lake Park here in Anchorage. The ride started at 7:00pm, riders were asked to ride to the ride if possible as parking was limited and the gates at the park are usually locked by 10:00pm. The Anchorage Fat Bike Brigade showed in force, 130+ riders braved the frosty temps (5 to 10 degrees).

My wife Lorrie and I rode from our house to the start of the ride. We brought toys which Lorrie picked up. I suggested toys that could fit in our packs. My wife had other ideas, she wanted to bring a boy and girl toy. She thought Teddy the Tiger would be a great gift for a girl. Not one to be saddled down by logistics Lorrie strapped Teddy the Tiger to her pack and off we went!

Below are pics of the start of the group ride, there were way too many Fat-Bikers present for my camera to capture in one picture.

I hope everyone out there in the Fat-Nation had a spectacular Global Fat Bike Day!
