First Look – RSD Mayor v4 – By Andy Amstutz

I like being medium.  Medium is good.  Vertically…I’m medium.  I’m about halfway between two extremes of height.  In other words, I’m average.  Doors open up for those above me and those below but recently, one opened up for me in the form of a fat bike to test and review.  Medium has its benefits once in a while.

RSD Bikes sent me their most recent updated version of the Mayor Fatbike (v4 Aluminum) and it’s a beaut! Some significant changes have been made and you can check out the deets here. Our demo came with “Build 2” or what gnomez likes to call “the Rally Sport Package”.

So far, the winter we’ve been experiencing this year in northwest lower Michigan has been pretty medium too.  Medium temps, medium snow, medium ice, and medium sunshine.  The plan is to spend the next eight weeks on this medium-sized fat-bike and report back with my impressions of the Mayor.

Rumor has it that v4 of the Mayor can fit the fattest of the fat tires available.  I plan on finding that out for darn sure.  My trusty sidekick, co-host of the Fat Camp Podcast and tire connoisseur, KBS, did some wrenching and built up this gorgeous-looking steed so I can ride groomed and old school trails, hit some stretches of beach and tool over to the local watering holes for the rest of the winter.  Stay tuned for some verdicts….aka the fat-bike.com review of the RSD Mayor!

Looking forward to the review! That exact bike is on my short list for my new ride. I love that Rsd has raked the front end out slacker than any other fat bike going. Bad ass bike.

This seems like the first Fat bike with what I would call more modern geometry. I’m interested in what its like. I have the first gen Mayor and its super steep HTA at 69′ was pretty wild for the trails I ride in the winter. Also I have a medium and as far as mediums go it was quite large. the center of the BB to the top of top tube measure close to 19 inches. This season I switched to a Blizzard and its much more agreeable on the decents where I ride, I’m waiting for a fat bike with a HTA in the 65-66 range, STA around 76 and relatively short chainstays. Also has to run FAT tires, so a 197 rear end will be required. For reference, I ride in western Canada (Fernie, BC), on groomed and snow shoe packed trails, our trails are the same as our summer trails so its more all mountain riding than XC.
