Philippe Berruyer was part of the very first edition of Raid Trans-Mauritania (RTM) run last month (February 2019). He sent us some striking photos that sent me down the wormhole of discovering more about the East African Nation of Mauritania and the RTM. Mauritania is on the east coast of Africa and right next to the Sahara Desert. Raid is a term that’s linked to off-road rally races like the Dakar. The RTM is run in a similar fashion but on bicycles. On paper, from halfway around the globe the RTM appears to be similar to the Simpson Desert Bicycle Challenge. (keep in mind that I’ve never been to either event). The RTM is what cable news likes to call ‘Breaking News’.
The RTM is a six-stage adventure race for fat-bikes that covers 350 km in the Adrar Region In North Mauritania.
Philippe was one of the ten participants who rode each stage through Mauritania’s dynamic landscape.
Philippe thought that the dune was particularly unbelievable!
They already have plans for next year’s event in February 2020.
