Event Spotlight – Snow Crown Series (WI)

Geo

Our long-time amigo George from Broken Spoke Bicycle Studio runs a race series in the Northeast corner of Wisconsin called the Snow Crown that consists of four events that all have a personality of their own. I may be a little biased but my personal favorite is the Shelltrack race! I was at the first Shelltrack race. My two dogs (Bodhi & Cecil) helped me win the derby. I think that was the first race where there was a ‘beer-shortcut’. George had gotten the local Pabst Distributor to donate a pallet of tall-boys and by the end of the day, we were all tired and buzzed (and we couldn’t wait to do it again!).

The venue at Shelltrack is an old-school picnic pavilion on the shores of Lake Michigan. The covered pavilion is nestled between the primary dune and a small dune field at a Manitowoc County Park. Just to make things more quaint, there’s a creek that meanders through the picnic grove and out to the beach. It’s a great short course that can be run in almost any weather or trail conditions. Leia, Spinner & I will be recording the next Dose of Fat Podcast at this year’s Shelltrack Race on December 14th. Come on out and give us a high five!

The Fat Ish is the race in the series that I’ve never been to but I know that the area has some world-class groomed fat-bike runs. The start for this one is a tubing LeMans blast down the hill that resulted in total carnage at the bottom…ya gotta love that! (video above)

Fat Camp is held at the fun and flowy Reforestation Camp Trails just outside of Green Bay. I’d call it a racer’s race track. Singletrack and wide-open ski trail for passing.

The last race in the series up at Snow Cap in Kewanee. Maybe this one we could call the climber’s racecourse, but by the end of the season, we should all have good legs, right?
