Editor’s Note: Our amigo Greg Madison took a trip down to Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park in Utah. It’s a beautiful spot with pastel pink sand. Greg shared his local Idaho dunes with us last fall and now he’s back with a ride report from Utah. I’m gonna send Greg some schwag! Here’s Greg’s ride report from CPSDSP.
I went to this state park in Southern Utah near Kanab in early March. I had no idea that the elevation of the park is over 5,000 ft. so the high temps were in the low 30s and it snowed 4″ the day before we arrived! This is a popular OHV destination but since we were there mid-week I never saw one out on the dunes. Although a few people had them in the campground. This flat area on the way to the large dunes had the most snow cover. It was cold so the snow was easy to plow through
Higher up, the wind had blown away much of the snow leaving mostly dry sand but still very ridable.
Some areas had much deeper wind drifted snow that could not be detected until riding through it! Fortunately, I had enough speed before hitting this deep snow to pedal through it!
The taller dunes presented a challenge to find a ridable route to the top and the ‘funnest’ way down. The great thing about sand is there are no trails so I could try multiple lines. The white snow and pink sand created some incredible views!
One of the locals really liked my bike! I was gonna let him take a test ride but the frame was way too small for this big guy so he settled for a duo selfie!
Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park is a great place for fat bikes! It is a popular OHV destination but if you go mid-week you may get lucky like me and nearly have the whole place to yourself! There are areas in the smaller dunes which are off-limits to the OHV users so you can still find good riding if the machines are about. There is a great campground there with dry sites and about 20 with electricity and water. It’s about 40 miles from Kanab Utah so bring everything you need. Go check it out cuz real fat bikers ride pink sand!
