Made U.P. Lake Ehfect

You all should be familiar with the name Todd Poquette. He’s the cat behind the 906 Adventure Team and the race director of the Polar Roll, The Marji Gesick, and the Crusher bike races. He’s kind of a big deal. Well now, Todd is also the man behind something called Made UP. As far as we could tell, it’s a bike company that just introduced a new four-season fat bike called the Lake Ehfect.

We contacted Todd about the new project after seeing some stereotypical social media teaser photos put out there to garner interest (it worked). The first thing that we noticed was that the Lake Ehfect was made from Chromoly (steel) and that the chainstays were a unique blend of plates and tubes connected to a pair of Paragon Machine Works sliding dropouts (photos below).

ONE BIKE. FOUR SEASONS.

SPRING. SUMMER. FALL. WINTER. REPEAT.

Steel fat bikes have been around for as long as the genre has existed, however, they’re not as prevalent as they once were in the US market. It’s not like cyclists decided that they didn’t want them, it was more of a case where bike manufacturers moved on to lighter materials like Aluminum, Carbon Fiber, and Titanium. There’s definitely a group of hard-core cyclists out there that have a strong preference for steel bikes and Made UP wants to offer those cyclists a steel fat bike that they can ride all year long. I can think of a few of my amigos that would applaud a steel fat bike that can be run as a singlespeed!

ONE BIKE. EVERY SURFACE.

WHEREVER YOU ROAM. LAKE EHFECT IS AT HOME.

I emailed Todd about the new Made UP bike company and let him know that we were interested in learning more about the Lake Ehfect and this is what he shared about the new project.

General gameplan: Inspired by the U.P. Manufactured in the U.P. Invest in the local economy.
Design inspiration: Enhanced gravel. Four seasons. Wilderness. Adventure. Life in the midwest.
Marketing Angle: MADE U.P. meaning made in the U.P. and we’re having fun making shit up as we go.
Sustainability: Produce bikes here. Design bikes that are utilitarian and purpose driven. Consider the impact of production, manufacturing, and sourcing on our economy and the environment.
Strategy: Figure out what people need. Give it to them. Lake Ehfect – We took everything we love about bikes and riding four seasons and created… One bike to ride them all.

The prototype (photo above) is decked out with Morrow Packs, HED Wheels, and Ignite Components Inferno Cranks. The prototype phase of the Lake Ehfect is being manufactured at Equinox Bicycleworks in the Keweenaw (that’s in the UP for those of you that don’t know).

ONE BIKE. NO DRESS CODE.

SPANDEX TO FLANNEL. DOESN’T MATTER.

So there you have it. A bike for all seasons made in the Upper Penninsula for the Upper Penninsula. For more information about the Lake Ehfect visit – https://madeupeh.com/

Really hoping this isn’t made up because this looks like a cool new steel whip to hit the scene!
