aeroe spider FAT rack – Backpack any Bike

Mi gnomefest primo, Dustin, and myself, have been giving the new Aero Spider Fat Racks a try for the last few weeks and today Aeroe announced the official release of the new (wider) Fat rear rack that works seamlessly with their handlebar cradle and extra-heavy-duty dry bags that allow even full suspension fat bikes to carry two 15 L dry bags on the rear rack and a third, in the h-bar cradle. The Spider Fat Rack was a great solution for Dustin’s Ventana Tandem (photo above). The tanden doesn’t have any rack braze ons to attach a more traditional style of rack. It also is an ideal tool to deal with carrying packs on bikes that have a dropper post.

When I first saw photos of the Spider rack, I shared them with mi amigos that make up the brain trust of the intergalactic brotherhood of bicycle wizards Local 414. I wondered if the rack would be sturdy enough and I wondered if the load would compromise the seat stays on a carbon fatty. Scott at Corvus told me that I probably didn’t have to worry about the carbon chainstays on my bike Ten Beers and the general consensus from the bike black ribbon society think tank was that we should give’m a try. So we got Dustin to load up his Fat Tandem and I’ve been trying them on a couple of different fat bikes.

I found the initial installation a bit fiddly, or at least, harder than I thought it was going to be before I started. The rubber feet kept on falling out of the base as I tried to attach the rack. I ended up, gluing them into place. I needed to reroute the rear brake cable housing but that just meant clipping a zip tie. It pays to take your time and make sure that the attachment straps are routed correctly. It would be easy to trap a cable under one of the straps. All of the hardware on the Spider can be installed or adjusted with a 5mm Allen wrench. Once you get the hang of how the attachment straps install and adjust, the Aoeroe rack can be installed by anyone. With a little bit of bend, flex, and adjustment, the spider fat rack grabbed ahold of the seatstays of my bike firmly and created a tubular archway over the top of the rear tire. My concerns about the sturdiness of the spider rack went away as soon as I torqued the straps into the final position. Then I bolted on two cradles and attached a pair of their thick heavy duty dry bags. It felt solid as a rock. I found that during the need for a portage, the top of the Aeroe Spider Fat Rack could be used as a nice sturdy handle to pick up the back end of the loaded bike. The rack and cradles are very adjustable, and there were no issues with heel clearance with the loads in the pics above. During transit, the fat spider is quiet and rattle-free.

The Aero handlebar cradle attaches to your bars with the same strap system as the fat spider. The thing that I like about the cradle is that it allowed me to access a center bar hand position. The cradle leaves room for my fingers to wrap around the bar all the way into the stem. It also leaves a nice gap for all of the cables to pass through.

The Aeroe dry bags are made with the thickest material that I’ve come across for ‘roll-top’ style dry bags. They have two welded loops that fit the built-in starps of the cradles. Aeroe has put together a solid system that now has the option to make it easier to fit a fat bike. Here’s the full scoop on the press release of the Spider Fat Rack from Aeroe.

aeroe™ release their spider FAT rack designed specifically for FAT Bikes.

New Zealand based aeroe have just released an updated version of their patented and award-winning spider rear rack to now fit any FAT bike.

Designed specifically for FAT bikes – the spider FAT rack is a simple and secure way to carry any brand of dry bag, tents, sleeping bags or other gear on any type of FAT Bike or FAT E- Bike.

The rack comes with one cradle which has in-built straps that holds the gear in place. Additional cradles can then be added to the rack and located on top, or the sides of the rack – or both – depending on how much gear you need to take. All cradles can be rotated 180 degrees to suit heel clearances, clearance from your saddle, full suspension use, 100% full use of your dropper post or handling preferences. All aeroe cradles and accessories are compatible with both versions of the rack.

The quick release rack mounts to the seat stays with silicone coated straps and rubber cushioned feet at 4 points and doesn’t require any mounts on the bike to install. It can be quickly taken on/off – or swapped between bikes as required using just a 5mm allen/hex key.

Been using this rack for a year now on my Mayor.
It says “updated”- what’s new on this version?.

The inner dimension of the spider rack is wider. Sized for 197 T/A rear triangle – increases tire clearance.
