During the 2014 edition of the super bike party known as Interbike, our crew caught up with Gary Fisher and asked him what his take on fat-bikes was. This is one of my all-time favorite videos we’ve done because his passion was evident! Check out his prediction towards the end, did he nail it?

I built my first fatbike around 2012-ish. An all carbon hardtail it was so much fun. On my third build now, a Foes Mutz. Having a fatbike in my quiver allows me to ride the same trails I ride my other, non fat, bikes and enjoy them from a different perspective. During our So cal winters, beach rides keep me off local trails while the dirt dries out. The fun doesn’t have to stop. ⁰0
I only ever rode a Mutz at Interbike. Owning one is still on my dream list!
20% of the market didn’t work out, but I love 2014 Gary’s optimism.
Fatbikes are >20% of my fleet!
For many years I only rode fatbikes. Klunkers and Cargo Bikes stole some of the thunder but this year may tip back in the fatbikes favor!
I think that fatbikes win a lot of favor for fun & functionality. I appreciate how they give me more forgiving line choices on the trail and how much more speed you can carry in the turns and downhill. I fell in love with my Surly pugsley back in 2011. And then soon added a carbon race fatbike to my stable – then eventually buying a 29+ wheelset to throw on in summer. Fast forward 10+ yrs I have 4 fatbikes that get heavy rotated use year round.
I think almost all my riding buds have a fatbike. But most seem to only use them in winter unlike me. If you only see them as a winter weapon then the appeal drops off as some struggle with riding in cold. And or prefer a trainer in winter. But for those that see the Fatbike as a year round mtb solution they are hard to beat.
Right on, Nathin! Year-round fatbiking may get a boost from 45NRTH! They just sent an email around that the Vanhelga is the year-round-fatbike tire. Very good coming from a company that started as winter and groomed trails and is now embracing the other seasons. Thanks for keeping the faith!
