What Happens When You Fatbike Until Sunset?

This is Day 3 of Bikes, Boat and Goats, A Western Michigan Fatbike Sand Odyssey: Fat-Bike Beach Touring from Pentwater to Ludington

Four days. Three nights. One ferry ride. One full moon. Over 100 miles on two wheels, with about 30 of those right on the beach sand of Lake Michigan’s stunning west coast. What more could you ask for?

We set out to explore the stretch from Ludington to Silver Lake State Park and back — sticking to the sand as much as possible. We pedaled our way past dune rides, dive bars, and plenty of burgers, carrying everything we needed for a beach-heavy bikepacking adventure.

Day 3: Back to Ludington – (Sunday, July 13)

The Cottage Garden Café is your go-to for a real breakfast in Pentwater. Full of locals, full of flavor.

The beach ride north from Pentwater was sweet — about 6 miles before a seawall forced a reroute at Summit Park. The climb off the beach with 80–100 pound rigs? Brutal.

Puck and Greggers took the long way so I chilled at McDonald’s in Ludington before reconvening at Ludington Pub. It was too nice for our dive bar radar — but Bud’s Tap Room nailed the aesthetic. Cheap beer. Worn stools. Locals. $2.50 PBRs. Bingo.

We saw Greggers off as he boarded the S.S. Badger back to Wisconsin, then headed north to Ludington State Park for one last night under the stars.
