Cold-weather riding is an art of layers. Too much and you overheat, too little and you freeze. How do you dress for success on winter rides?

Here are some clothing recommendations we’ve made over the years.

That’s this week’s Fat-Bike Question of the Week! Got a story, a photo, or a hot take? Toss it in the comments—we’d love to hear it. And keep your eyes peeled… a fresh question rolls out every week!

  1. Cotton t-shirt (favourite band) , Columbia reflective long sleeve, Fat-Bike.com jersey and a plaid jacket on top. Thin biking leggings, long ski socks and Race Face winter pants on the bottom. Try not to look like downhill skier.

      • No Greg. I was being a real couch potato over the Holidays. The snow has been falling steadily over the past week and I do plan on getting out with 2 friends and joining a group ride this Saturday. The trails around town are magnificent at the moment.

  2. Merino long sleeve shirt with a windproof front over a merino jersey with a windbreaker on top has me covered to -18ºC I will layer up more if it gets cold, but my heat exchanger mask is my secret weapon against cold

    • Tell us about that heat exchanger mask! Over the years I’ve tried a BUNCH of face protection and never really found the sweet spot. Warm face = foggy glasses!

  3. Wool, wool, wool. Both Varusteleka and Cima Coppi. With on-sale windproof pants/jackets from Sierra.

For temps above 10d F, its 2 layers of wool on the top (Base: 180gm2, Jersey: 190gm2), one wool base layer on the bottom (180gm2) and windproof pants. For temps below 10dF, swap out the base layer to 250gm2.

BTW, can not recommend Varusteleka enough: https://varusteleka.com/en-us/collections/merino-wool?page=1
