The Simpson Desert Bike Challenge, now in its 33rd year, is a five-day event that will see riders take on the world's largest parallel sand dune system. The cyclists will traverse the Simpson Desert in outback Australia from East to West, covering approximately 500 kilometres over 9-stages.
2019 will be the first year that the SDBC heads West across the desert and finishes at the Mt Dare Hotel.
The event will start in Birdsville, QLD with a fast prologue stage before heading to the first sand dune known as ‘Big Red’ and the start of Stage 1. Highlights will include steep sand dunes, big open swales, Poeppel's Corner, Purni Bore and Dalhousie Springs.
The Simpson Desert Bike Challenge has three key tenets:
- Provide opportunities for personal achievement in a sporting challenge
- Support community interests through raising funds for the Royal Flying Doctor Service
- Foster appreciation of the Australian outback and the natural environment
