Cuyuna Lakes Whiteout

March 1, 2014

The 2014 Cuyuna Lakes Whiteout returns with the hardy blend of social rides and races that have made this event so popular. Like the moonshiners of Riverton, we are always tweaking the recipe as we distill the Cuyuna Lakes experience into a concoction that, while leaving you a bit fuzzy on the details, will ensure that a good time is had.

The Whiteout kicks off on Friday, February 28th, 2014 with our patented registration and FRIDAY NIGHT DINNER & AMAZING SWAG RAFFLE at the Ironton American Legion Hall. Besides being a chance to check in for the night’s activities, its a fine time to grab some hearty grub and shoot the breeze with fellow riders.

After your bellies are filled and your hearts are warmed by stories of the Trommald Triplets, its time to head over to the Croft Mine parking lot for either the YAWKEY FRIDAY NIGHT FAT BIKE RIDE or the PORTSMOUTH FRIDAY NIGHT SNOWSHOE TOUR.

The YAWKEY FRIDAY NIGHT FAT BIKE RIDE takes you on a fun and fascinating tour of the Yawkey Unit of the Cuyuna Lakes Mountain Bike trails. Ride the trails that made the Yawkey Unit famous, like Bob Sled, in a way you never have before. Groups are divided up by skills/speed so you won’t be left behind for the wolves.

If you want a different experience, try the PORTSMOUTH FRIDAY NIGHT SNOWSHOE TOUR. See the area as the Yeti sees it (well, if he had a snowshoes and a headlamp). This tour takes you to the top of Man High Hill for a scenic vista of the Cuyuna Lakes area.

You better get a good night’s rest because you are going to need it on Saturday, March 1st, 2014. We start the day early with the RACE BAG PICK UP/CONTINENTAL BREAKFAST at Cycle Path & Paddle. Racers will get the days race packets and maybe indulge in some real powerbars – local pastries. Of course, you’ll have to wash those down with a coffee so powerful its made in a concrete mixer.

This is prelude to the main event for the day, the IRON YETI SNOXROSS RACE. Taking its name from our favorite furry friend, the IRON YETI SNOXROSS RACE will ensure some of the finest fat bike racin’ & ridin’ there is. There are some special treats in store for the race this year, but we will keep those under our fur hats till January.
Somebody rides a fat bike too...

After you finish your ride, head over to the Crosby Memorial Park for some festivities. Those include another set of races, the SERPENT LAKE ICE BIKE RACE. This is actually two races, a Beginner and an Expert ice race that puts riders on the Serpent Lake ice for plenty of thrills and spills.

Well, you should be pretty tuckered out by now, so stick around for the AWARDS CEREMONY and cheer on the days winners. Who knows, it might include you!
