Frozen Fat Fondo Festival

February 6, 2016

Continue to make history and be a part of FORC's second Fatbike challenge, the Frozen Fat Fondo Festival! The FFFFestival will be held -- rain or shine, snow or slime -- on the beautiful shores of the Mississippi River at the newly rebuilt Credit Island Lodge (for real this time). Riders will test their mettle on a circuit featuring many technical challenges (b-lines available for each) through thick lowland forest and chunky river shoreline on this 3 hour endurance ride. Participate as a 3-person relay team or solo. 3.5" tires or greater required! Stick around after the main event for even more shenanigans and tomfoolery. All proceeds from this event benefit FORC to continue maintaining and improving local trails.  Details on the website:

Frozen Fat Fondo Festival

A Fat Bike adventure challenge. If you're seeking XC type race on fat bikes, this is not it. Stick around for Highly Competitive events on fat bikes -- wheelie, skidmark, and track stand contests -- for which the Good prizes are awarded. Fat bike jousting or polo is likely to breakout. Pay attention to the potluck part on the website.

Susitna 100 and Little Su 50K

February 13, 2016 February 16, 2016

The Susitna 100 mile is a ski, foot, or bike races held on packed snowmachine and dog sled trails in the Susitna River valley, north of Anchorage. The remoteness of the trail, distance between checkpoints, and the winter conditions during the Race make it necessary for the racers to carry with them survival equipment (48 hour time limit).

Run in conjunction with it's older brother, the Susitna 100, the Little Su 50k shares some of the same course as the 100 miler. This race offers a distance that will appeal to the sprinters as well as those looking for a day adventure. It will also appeal to those who are here to watch and/or support someone doing the longer 100 mile race (12 hour time limit).

Fat Bike Lake Winnipeg

February 16, 2016

On the first day, the Polar expedition guides will provide instruction on winter riding and environmental hazards, and will conduct a mandatory equipment check. There will also be time for any missing equipment to be purchased (or possibly rented) in Winnipeg. A mandatory packing list will be sent to all registered riders before arriving.

From Winnipeg we will head North to Hecla Island, located in Hecla-Grindstone Provincial Park. Along with further instruction on fat biking in winter conditions, camp set up, fuel stove operation, tent and sleep set-up, mechanisms of heat loss, moisture management, layering, and food preparation, we’ll get everyone out on their bikes for a warm up ride to test out their bikes and equipment. Dinner and a warm night’s sleep at the Hecla Resort await us before our morning departure onto the ice.

Riding as a group, we will ride and push our bikes an average of 5 – 6 hours a day over 3 days along the frigid surface of Lake Winnipeg. Facing sub-zero temperatures and possible extreme wind-chills, we’ll battle along, testing our strength and willpower, learning many new skills along the way. Riders will pack all personal equipment on their bikes; a skidoo will be available for assistance and emergencies but not for carrying equipment. All participants will help with the logistics of camp set up and tear down as well helping to prepare drinking water and the basic, but high caloric meals each morning and night. The warmth of your sleeping bags and tents will feel like the ultimate luxury at the end of a hard day. If we’re lucky, we’ll have clear nights, the stars will shine incredibly bright, with a chance of witnessing the Northern Lights.

When we finish riding our 3rd day on the ice we will transport everyone back to our Winnipeg hotel. There we will celebrate our achievement with a final dinner together and discuss everyones future fat biking adventure dreams.

Who says you can’t ride your bike on a frozen lake in the middle of the winter and then camp out for a night or three? Not us. As part of our preparations for the first commercial fat bike expedition to the South Pole, we are hosting a winter fat bike training camp on Lake Winnipeg. Open to all interested participants, and required (with exceptions) for those wishing to ride with us in Antarctica, the event will take place over 5 days, and 6 nights; 4 nights in hotels and two on the ice.
