  1. WD-40 also works for winter riding, My fattie picks up lots of road grit and snow/ice so I spray the chain, cassette, chain ring, and derailleur(s) after every ride. I wipe off the crud and leave it for the next ride — the water displacement property ensures that the moisture is drawn out of the moving parts where it will evaporate (even at near freezing temperatures). Just make sure not to spray it into the bearings (e.g. an external BB).

    It is a light lubricant so I don’t even use chain lube — the WD-40 will more than do the job for one ride (I’d argue it is a better lube if you are willing to apply it every time — its definitely cheaper).

    I don’t (can’t) clean my chain for our 3 month season so chain wear was a real problem before I went the WD-40 route.
