The Weekly Dose of Fat 11/10/2017

It’s the sixth anniversary of the Weekly Dose of Fat! So we’re celebrating with a little trip up north in search of snow! I think I’ve got a bead on where, I’m headed this weekend. Where are you and your tribe riding this weekend? We’re getting set to share our plus bike reviews of the new Surly Krampus and the 509 Jabit – and just before winter arrives, we’ll pivot and throw some fat bike wheels on the Jabit and see how it likes wet, December snow. We’re having a trio of riders from the Chicago Chapter of the Bike Black Ribbon Society test the Specialized Fatboy Expert and in command of this new, collaborative approach to our bike review procedure is (fellow Hoosier) Julio dot com. Black Ribbon Radio Hour, Exec. Director, Evan Larsson and our newest BBR Test Pilot Rob Neff round out the team and we told them to pass the Fatboy around like….well something, like a plate of mashed potatoes, at Thanksgiving.

This week, I re-discovered the bike-joring world, with a little help from my friend, Karen Deboise. That’s Karen competing in the  2017 Red Paw Dirty Dog Dryland Derby on her old school Surly (photo above). Fat-Bikes and dogs are like peas and carrots. I’m going to try to attend an event this winter to check out the competition, in person. Here is a link for an upcoming dry land event this weekend.

Borealis Fat Bikes on CNBC’s Adventure Capitalists Cable TV Show

Colorado Springs-based Borealis Fat Bikes lands offer from Jeremy Bloom on CNBC’s ‘Adventure Capitalists’

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo., Nov. 8, 2017 – Steve Kaczmarek, owner of Co. Springs-based Borealis Fat Bikes, appeared this week on CNBC’s “Adventure Capitalists,” for the Nov. 7 prime-time episode that showcases outdoor-industry entrepreneurs in a format similar to “Shark Tank.” World champion skier Jeremy Bloom, host of the CNBC show, offered Kaczmarek $250,000 for a 25- percent stake in the company. Negotiations are still underway. Bloom – who lives in Boulder – is a three-time world champion, two-time Olympian, and 11-time World Cup Gold Medalist in skiing, and, more recently, a technology CEO. Kaczmarek started Borealis Fat Bikes in 2013. With his experience as a successful entrepreneur founding multiple startups, he implemented operational procedures that drove exponential growth during the first two years. Last year, sales reached $2.5 million. “Appearing on ‘Adventure Capitalists’ was the highlight of the year,” Kaczmarek said. “Borealis Fat Bikes was able to demonstrate the versatility of our products on national TV with superstars – and it was gratifying to have the investors recognize that our new bikes are even better and lighter than previous models. This entire experience was amazing from the start.”

Our amigo and talented illustrator, Garrett Olsen, created a cool fat-bike cartoon for Inktober. He’s selling these Fat Life Stickers. I ordered a couple, because I have like a ten cent a day sticker habit. True confessions of a sticker junkie –
