Fat (video) Tuesday – Cwm Eigiau by Jeff Price

Fat Bike to Cwm Eigiau

First things first. Cwm Eigiau translates to Eigiau valley from the Welsh language to English.

During the last few months, we’ve all found it difficult to ride our bikes in the places we have taken for granted in previous times. As the restrictions are very slowly getting lifted here in Wales (we are different to England), I felt the time was right to head to my favourite valley, Cwm Eigiau.

The car park was empty, which meant no one was out in the mountains. I had them to myself. I’ve cycled here many times and the scenery never disappoints me. Right from the start, the disastrous Eigiau dam comes into view just off my right shoulder and so does the huge gap in the wall. Back in 1925 just 14 years after the dam was built it gave way and sent water hurtling down the mountainside to the village below causing the loss of 16 lives.

The route soon follows the old track that was used to bring the slate down from the mountain. There are remnants of the days gone by strewn along the way to the quarry itself, old bridges, ruined buildings, and even an old teapot!

At the head of the valley after a good bit of climbing the quarry comes into view beneath the Caerneddau mountain range. Once there it’s time to reflect on the last few months and hope for a better future.

I’ve missed this…..

  1. The second image – looking up the valley with the bike on its side – is easily worthy of being a Wallpaper Wednesday image.

  2. Between the drone footage and the framing of your shots, you’ve seriously stepped up your game!

Cheers Jeff, thanks for sharing as always!!
