Fat (video) Tuesday – #BAMfatbike2018 – By Tom Ice

Tom Ice sent us a compilation video that covers all twelve of his Bivvy a Month trips from 2018. If this doesn’t get you stoked to take up the quest to complete the Bivvy a Moth Challenge for 2019, nothing will! I got out a few times in 2018 in what some might say was a failed #BAMfatbike2018 attempt but I like to think of it as four magic nights of freedom and that’s better than no magic at all… no matter how you slice it.

Jeff Price and Tom Ice are the first two gents to earn a Bivvy a Month Club merit badge and a special edition hot pocket jersey wallet handmade by Donut Sack Bike Bags.

Who wants to take up the BAM challenge for 2019? Next year we’re going to up our game as far as awarding prizes if you complete a bivvy a month in 2018. Stay tuned for details at the end of the month about what we’ve got cooked up for #BAMfatbike2019!

  1. Tiny snowman at 1:06!

Great shots, beautiful views, and a giant ball of adventure! Thanks for sharing!

  2. This looks like a good year of adventure by anyone’s standard but I’m going to be an arsehole and ask is camping in a tent bivvying?

    • It’s a good question! One that I can partially answer. I would define it as an overnight campout on your bike. You could sleep in a tent or a shelter or out under the stars or in a bivy sack. That sort of covers Bivy with one ‘V’. I’ll let Jeff explain the Bivvy with two ‘V’s’. The difference in the nomenclature has something to do with a colloquial dialect specific term. I still don’t know a bivvy from a bothy so …

      • Hi Guys, thanks for raising your query.
The challenge is called ‘Bivvy a Month challenge’.
        The guidelines are:
Spend at least one night out every month using a tent, tarp, bothy, bivvy bag, wigwam, cave, shopping trolley etc, you get the point.
No accommodation which can include hostels, campsites, cars and so on.
You must do it by bike, I mean who’d want to walk when we have fat bikes!
Your garden doesn’t count but you could be cheeky and use a neighbours!

Check out last years initial post:

As for the two V’s in bivvy, lets say the journey from the UK over the Atlantic ocean added a V.
And a bothy is a old dwelling that is open to the public to use as a shelter over here in the UK.

Hope that clears it up and you’re interested in giving BAM a go in 2019!

  3. Thanks all. It was a lot of fun and made for some excellent adventures and memories. Definitely saw it all as far as weather goes, but made it that much more fun. May go for the Oak Clusters in Jan 2019 🙂 Who knows, may go for all of 2019???
