So you get a new fat bike as winter 2015 comes to a close and the thought is, “O well, that was nice, put it in the bike storage until next winter so I can ride it again.”
Wrong homie.
I took out Salsa Beargrease X01 on the red dirt bacon strip of Cuyuna this summer and was instantly stunned at what this fat bike can do on the dirt. It’s even better on dirt than snow . . . O my.
Fat bike?
How about Fa(s)t bike?
Maybe even Hyper-Ludicrous Fa(s)t Bike.
Seriously, the term fat bike is terrible positioning for the ride qualities of this bike on dirt. It would be better called the “red dirt rocket” that doesn’t know how to loose grip.
I think we have Salsa’s engineer Pete Koski to blame. Whatever he did engineering wise on this bike from a geometry point of view, he crushed it, and knocked it out of the park. At least for my Finnish 6′ 0″ frame, its absolutely right on, all the time.
It’s rock and roll, it’s hold on, buckle up, it’s pure smile fest and skip work all summer.
Then there is those chunky 45NRTH Vanhelga tires. 45NRTH was a winter tire company, right? Wrong. Freaky good fat bike tire on dry dirt like we had in Cuyuna during the month of July and early August.
When it was dry as a bone, Vanhelga could care less, tip it, rip it, tee it high and let if fly.
Don’t believe me, get one, rip it, you’ll thank me later. I’m in process of liquidating my full suspension bike because I can’t see any reason to own it any more.
Fa(s)t bike nation. Join the rage.
how much dat puppy weigh?
24 lbs 13 oz for a size large, according the manufacturer’s website.
http://salsacycles.com/bikes/beargrease/2015_beargrease_carbon_xx1/build_kit/
Mine weighs in at 24lbs with rigid fork and tubeless Dillinger 4’s. Swapped out the brakes for xtr, added some more carbon cockpit parts and saddle. Low 23 lbs. Add Bluto for around 25 total. It rips. My strava proves that it is faster than my Pivot LES and Niner Air 9 Carbon. Awesome bike.
The Salsa website shows 29-30lbs weights for the Beargrease – did something change?
