One can run across all sorts of small woodland creatures while out roaming the forests in the winter time. Squirrels, rabbits, an occasional gnome, but this past weekend was the first time I’ve seen a Mongoose in the single track. It was fat too, and obviously had little interest in hibernation. Mongoose, maker of “The Beast” everyone had so much fun with last year (some on the bike and lots on the blogs) has something else up its furry sleeve. In the next few weeks look for a low cost (I believe somewhere in the 1K range) mid/high range Independent Bicycle Dealer offering sometime this year. While this model is a prototype and the final specs aren’t set, this guy was rolling on 100 mil rims and a 190 rear end.
The Mongoose folks added that the component build (pictured above) is not accurate but the frame and fork are…and the 100mm rims will be drilled out on the production bike. Retail will be around a grand and feature a Shimano 10 speed drivetrain and Vee Mission 26X4 – 70 tpi Tires, even though the frame has clearances that will accommodate up to a 5 inch tire.

Those are long chainstays…well I guess that keeps the price down while clearing large tires and rims. No BB issues.

I can’t wait to see Chris Akrigg do some gnarly trials stuff on one.
